Which standard applies to your project
- ADA 2010 Standards: businesses, hotels, hospitals, assisted living, any public accommodation.
- Fair Housing Act: apartments and condos with 4+ units, first occupied after March 13, 1991.
- ICC/ANSI A117.1: referenced by the IBC and most state codes for Type A and Type B dwelling units.
- UFAS / Section 504: federally funded and public housing.

What does "code compliant" mean for a shower?
It means the shower is built to a published accessibility standard, most often the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design or ICC/ANSI A117.1, and can be shown to meet it on a cut sheet: a 60 x 30 inch roll-in or 36 x 36 inch transfer footprint measured clear inside, a threshold of 1/2 inch or less, grab bars in solid backing at 33 to 36 inches, a seat at 17 to 19 inches, controls within 38 to 48 inches of the floor, and a hand shower with a 59 inch hose.
Which standard applies to my project?
Public buildings, care facilities and businesses fall under the ADA 2010 Standards. Apartments and condos with four or more units built after March 1991 fall under the Fair Housing Act, and most state building codes reference ICC/ANSI A117.1 for Type A and Type B units. Federally funded housing may fall under UFAS or Section 504. A private home has no code requirement, but VA HISA reviewers, occupational therapists and Medicaid waiver programs use the ADA dimensions as the yardstick, which is why homeowners buy these too.
Is a code compliant shower different from a barrier free shower?
A barrier free shower simply has no curb. A code compliant shower is barrier free and also hits the clear-inside size, threshold, grab bar, seat, control and hand shower rules above. Every code compliant unit is barrier free; not every barrier free unit is code compliant.
What sizes do code compliant shower pans come in?
Fifteen stock sizes: 40 x 38 and 42 x 38 transfer pans, 45 x 50 and 45 x 51 compact roll-ins, and 62 x 43, 63 x 31, 63 x 33, 63 x 37, 63 x 39, 63 x 41, 63 x 42, 64 x 38, 64 x 42, 72 x 39 and 72 x 48 roll-ins. Outside dimensions are listed; the 63 x 31 and 63 x 33 give the 60 x 30 clear interior.

Yes. For commercial and multifamily projects we supply product cut sheets with dimensions, rough-in drawings, drain locations, seat and grab bar layouts, warranty and country of origin, in the format architects and VA reviewers ask for.
