A tub to shower conversion replaces a bathtub with a shower in the same alcove. For most households it is the right call: nobody was using the tub, and the 18-inch wall was the most dangerous step in the house. We do it with Bestbath pans and wall systems because they are made for exactly this space: 60 x 30 and 60 x 32 pans that drop into a standard alcove, with a beveled 3/4-inch threshold you can roll over, a fold-up seat, and walls with backing for grab bars anywhere.
What a conversion includes
- Removal and haul-away of the old tub, surround and fixtures.
- Plumbing: new Delta pressure-balance valve, handheld on a slide bar, drain relocation if the pan requires it.
- The pan: Bestbath roll in shower pan in 60 x 30, 60 x 32, 60 x 33, 60 x 36 or a custom size, barrier-free or low-curb.
- The walls: Bestbath wall panels or a Crestline three-wall system, reinforced for grab bars.
- Accessories: fold-down seat, two grab bars, collapsible water dam or weighted curtain, glass door if wanted.
- Cleanup, inspection and a walk-through with the bather.
Barrier-free or low threshold?
Barrier-free (zero threshold) is the right answer for wheelchair users and anyone who may need a rolling shower chair later. It needs a slight floor slope or a recessed subfloor, which we handle on slab and framed floors. A low 3/4-to-1.5-inch beveled curb is easier on some second-floor bathrooms and still works for walkers and most shower chairs. We will tell you which your floor allows on the first call.
Timeline and disruption
A standard 60-inch conversion is one working day with a two-person crew. Tile removal, floor repairs or moving the drain can add a second day. You lose the bathroom for that time only; we do not leave a job half-finished overnight.
