What size is a roll in shower?

The ADA minimum for a roll in shower is 60 inches wide by 30 inches deep with a threshold no higher than 1/2 inch. The alternate roll in shower is 60 x 36. A transfer shower is exactly 36 x 36. Residential roll in showers run from about 48 x 34 for small bathrooms up to 63 x 33 and larger.

Which size should you pick?

  • 60 x 30: replaces a standard 5 ft tub with no wall moves. The most common choice.
  • 60 x 33 or 60 x 36: more room for a caregiver standing in the shower, or a larger wheelchair or shower chair.
  • 63 x 33 and up: bariatric bathers or two-person assisted bathing.
  • 48 x 34 or 48 x 36: small bathrooms and old stall showers.
  • 40 x 38 transfer: for people who slide from a chair onto the seat rather than roll in.

The dimension people forget: the space in front

A wheelchair needs room to line up with the opening. Plan a clear 60 inch turning circle in the bathroom if you can, and at least a 30 x 60 clear space along the shower entry. If the toilet or vanity sits right in front of the shower, a narrower 48 inch unit with a wider entry can work better than a 60 inch unit with a cramped approach.

Questions

Roll In Shower Dimensions FAQ

What are the ADA dimensions for a roll in shower?

At least 60 inches wide by 30 inches deep inside, a threshold of 1/2 inch or less, a clear floor space at least 60 x 30 inches along the entry, a seat 17 to 19 inches high and grab bars 33 to 36 inches above the floor.

What is the smallest roll in shower?

About 48 x 34 inches for residential units. The ADA minimum for a roll in shower is 60 x 30; a 36 x 36 transfer shower is smaller but needs the bather to transfer onto a seat.

Will a roll in shower fit where my bathtub is?

Yes. A 60 x 30 roll in shower has the same footprint as a standard 5 foot tub and is usually installed in one day.

How high is the seat in a roll in shower?

17 to 19 inches above the floor, the same as a wheelchair seat, so the bather can slide across.

How much space do I need in front of a roll in shower?

Plan at least 60 x 30 inches of clear floor along the entry, and a 60 inch turning circle in the room if the bather uses a wheelchair.
