"Made in USA" shows up in a lot of walk in tub advertising, and it means different things at different companies: molded and finished in an American factory, imported shell finished here, or simply an American brand name on an imported tub. With tariffs on imported goods moving prices in 2025 and 2026, families are asking which tubs are actually built here, whether it matters for quality, and what it does to the price. Here is the plain answer for the brands we install and the ones we do not.
Hydro Dimensions molds and finishes walk in tubs in California; Bestbath builds showers in Idaho; Safe Step assembles in Tennessee. Ella's Bubbles and Meditub import acrylic shells and finish and assemble in the U.S. Kohler and American Standard walk-in baths are made in North American plants. USA-molded tubs are less exposed to tariff swings and easier to get parts for; imported-shell tubs are not worse products. Pick the tub for the bather, then use origin as a tiebreaker.
What "made in USA" can mean on a walk in tub
- Molded and finished in the U.S. The shell comes out of an American mold, gets its frame, door, plumbing and jets in the same plant. Hydro Dimensions (California) and Bestbath showers (Idaho).
- Assembled in the U.S. An imported shell is fitted with frame, door, faucet and pumps at a U.S. facility. Ella's Bubbles (Illinois) and Meditub.
- American brand, North American plant. Kohler Walk-In Bath and American Standard build in North American facilities and sell through in-home appointments.
- American brand, imported tub. Common on marketplace listings with unfamiliar names; parts and warranty service can be the problem years later.
Does origin affect quality?
Less than the marketing suggests. The acrylic sheet and gelcoat resin come from a handful of global suppliers regardless of where the mold sits. What origin does affect is lead time, parts availability and price stability. A California-molded Hydro Dimensions tub is in our warehouse in a week or two and its pumps, seals and door parts are a phone call away in ten years. An imported-shell tub from an established U.S. assembler like Ella is nearly as quick and its parts are stocked domestically. A no-name import is where people get stuck.
Tariffs and 2026 pricing
Import duties on bath fixtures and components rose through 2025, and imported-shell brands passed some of that along. USA-molded tubs were less affected, though their pumps and faucets include imported parts too. In practice the gap between a USA-molded and an imported-shell walk in tub of the same size is a few hundred dollars either way, and it is dwarfed by the $8,000 to $10,000 difference between the dealer channel and the TV-brand in-home channel. If tariffs worry you, the bigger lever is how you buy, not where the shell was molded.

Why we carry both
Because the bather comes first. A wheelchair user needs a 36 inch outward-swing door, and the best of those are Ella's imported-shell Transfer tubs. A family that wants USA-molded, lifetime warranty and a labor warranty on a self-install wants Hydro Dimensions. A full-time wheelchair household is usually better with an Idaho-built Bestbath shower than any tub. Our job is to say which, in writing, without a sales visit.
Questions to ask any company about origin
- Where is the shell molded, and where is the tub assembled?
- Are door seals, pumps and faucets stocked in the U.S., and for how many years?
- Is the warranty honored by the manufacturer or only by the dealer?
- Can you show the factory schematic and spec sheet before I buy?
- Is the price itemized and good for 30 days in writing?
