Walk In Tub Fill and Drain Time: Will You Get Cold Waiting?

You sit in a walk in tub while it fills and while it drains, because the door has to stay closed. With a standard faucet that can mean several minutes each way. The fixes are a faster-filling faucet, a quick or dual drain, a heated seat or backrest, a handheld shower to keep warm, and a water heater big enough to fill the tub with hot water.

The most common complaint about walk in tubs, by far, is not the price or the door. It is this: "I get cold waiting for it to fill, and again waiting for it to drain." You see it over and over on senior and caregiver forums. It is a fair complaint, and it is mostly fixable when the tub is chosen and installed right.

Why you sit there while it fills and drains

A walk in tub has a watertight door. The door only seals when it is closed, and it cannot be opened while there is water in the tub. So the bather gets in, closes the door, then fills. At the end, they wait for the water to drain before opening the door. In a regular bathtub you would fill first and step in. In a walk in tub, you are sitting there for both.

How long does it really take? Do the math

Fill time depends on two things: how many gallons the tub holds to the overflow, and how many gallons per minute the faucet delivers. Drain time depends on the drain size and whether the tub has a quick drain or a pump.

Tub water to overflowStandard faucet (about 7 gal/min)Faster faucet (about 12 gal/min)
40 gallons (compact tub)about 6 minutesabout 3 to 4 minutes
55 gallons (typical 30 x 52)about 8 minutesabout 4 to 5 minutes
75 gallons (large or bariatric)about 11 minutesabout 6 to 7 minutes

Simple math: gallons divided by gallons per minute. Real flow depends on your water pressure and pipe size, so ask for the exact faucet flow rate and tub capacity of any model you are considering. Capacity is on each product page and spec sheet.

Drain time follows the same logic. A standard gravity drain on a deep tub can take several minutes. A quick-drain or dual-drain system can cut that substantially, and a pump-assisted drain shorter still. These systems are worth asking about if staying warm matters to you.

The 6 fixes that actually work

  1. A faster-filling faucet. A higher-flow Roman tub faucet fills noticeably faster than a standard one. It only helps if your water pressure and supply lines can deliver it, which is one reason we check plumbing during the in-home site visit.
  2. A quick drain or dual drain. Ask whether the model has one. It is one of the most noticeable comfort upgrades.
  3. A heated seat and backrest. Keeps your back and legs warm while you wait. On many models it can be added as an option. See our walk in tubs with jets and heat.
  4. Use the handheld shower. Run warm water over your shoulders while the tub fills, and again while it drains. Most of our tubs include a handheld shower wand.
  5. Warm the room. A small, safely mounted bathroom heater or heat lamp makes a big difference in winter. Never use a portable heater near water.
  6. Size the water heater for the tub. If the water heater runs out halfway through filling, the rest of the fill is lukewarm. Read what size water heater a walk in tub needs.
A simple routine that helps
Drape a warm towel over your shoulders as the tub fills. Start the handheld shower right away. Close the door, fill, enjoy the bath. When you open the drain, turn the handheld back on and keep the towel within reach. Most people who do this stop noticing the wait.

Choosing a tub when staying warm matters

  • Smaller, deeper tubs fill faster than long, wide ones because they hold less water. A compact tub can still give a deep soak. See walk in tubs for small bathrooms.
  • Ask for gallons to overflow and the faucet flow rate for every model you compare.
  • Ask about the drain. Quick, dual or pump-assisted drains make the biggest difference at the end of the bath.
  • Consider a roll in shower if someone gets chilled easily and does not need to soak. There is no waiting at all. Compare walk in tub vs. roll in shower.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to fill a walk in tub?

It depends on the tub's capacity and the faucet's flow rate. Divide the gallons to the overflow by the faucet's gallons per minute. A typical tub holding about 55 gallons takes roughly 8 minutes with a standard faucet of about 7 gallons per minute, and less with a faster faucet.

How long does a walk in tub take to drain?

A standard gravity drain on a deep tub can take several minutes. Quick-drain, dual-drain or pump-assisted drain systems shorten that noticeably, so ask about the drain on any model you consider.

Do you get cold in a walk in tub?

Many people do, because you sit in the tub while it fills and drains. A heated seat or backrest, a handheld shower, a faster faucet, a quick drain, a warm room and a properly sized water heater all help.

Why can't you open a walk in tub door while it drains?

The door seals watertight when closed. Opening it with water inside would let the water out onto the floor, so you wait until the tub has drained.

Does a bigger water heater help a walk in tub?

Yes. If the water heater cannot supply enough hot water to fill the tub, the end of the fill turns lukewarm. Size the water heater to the tub's capacity.
