Short answer

Does the VA pay for a roll in shower?

Yes. The VA Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant pays up to $6,800 over a lifetime for veterans with a service-connected disability, or with any condition if they are rated 50 percent or more service connected, and up to $2,000 for non-service-connected conditions. Veterans with severe service-connected disabilities can also use the larger SAH or SHA housing grants.

HISA can be used in addition to SAH or SHA. Grant limits for SAH and SHA change every October; check the current figures with your VA office.

The one rule that matters

Do not start work before the VA approves the HISA application. The VA does not reimburse work that began before approval. Get the prescription, the quote and the approval first, then schedule the install.

HISA for a roll in shower, step by step

  1. Ask your VA provider (primary care, PT or OT) for a prescription that says why a roll in or barrier free shower is medically needed.
  2. Get an itemized quote from a contractor. Ours lists the pan, walls, seat, grab bars, demolition, plumbing and labor line by line. Our VA HISA Estimate Planner builds the PDF in about four minutes.
  3. Submit VA Form 10-0103 with the prescription, the quote, and photos of the bathroom to your VA medical center's HISA coordinator, usually through Prosthetics.
  4. Wait for approval, then schedule the work.
  5. Close out with the paperwork and photos the VA asks for so payment is released.

What HISA covers in a shower project

  • Removing the tub and installing a roll in or barrier free shower
  • Grab bars, a fold-up seat and a handheld shower
  • Widening the bathroom door for a wheelchair
  • Non-slip flooring and lowering a sink where needed

When the grant does not cover it all

A 60 x 30 roll in shower installed by our crews runs about $15,500 after the current $2,000 promotion, $15,250 with our veteran discount. HISA covers part of that; state Medicaid waivers, other programs and financing can cover the rest.

Questions

VA Grant for a Roll In Shower FAQ

How much will the VA pay for a roll in shower?

Through the HISA grant, up to $6,800 over a lifetime for veterans with a service-connected disability or rated 50 percent or more service connected, and up to $2,000 for non-service-connected conditions. SAH and SHA grants can add more for severe service-connected disabilities.

What form do I use for a HISA grant?

VA Form 10-0103, the Veterans Application for Assistance in Acquiring Home Improvement and Structural Alterations, submitted with a prescription from a VA provider and a contractor quote.

Can I get reimbursed if I already installed the shower?

Generally no. The VA does not pay for HISA work that started before the application was approved, so get approval first.

Can I use HISA and SAH together?

Yes. HISA can be used in addition to an SAH or SHA grant, which helps when a full accessible bathroom costs more than one grant covers.

How long does HISA approval take?

It varies by VA medical center, from a few weeks to a few months. A complete package with the prescription, itemized quote and photos is the fastest path.
