- Alcove width wall to wall (the long side).
- Depth from back wall to the front of the old tub.
- Narrowest door and hallway on the way in. One-piece tubs need about 2 inches more than the tub width.
- Ceiling height over the tub if you want a shower.
- Where the drain is: left or right as you face the tub.

Door, step-in height and seat
The door threshold on a walk in tub is usually 3 to 7 inches, against 14 to 16 inches for a regular tub. Inward-swing doors keep the tub narrower and seal by water pressure; outward-swing doors give a wider opening for walkers and wheelchair transfers but need clear floor space in front. Seat height on most models is 16 to 18 inches, about chair height.
Picking the right size for the bather
- Over 6 ft or long legs: a 60 inch or lay-down model. See tubs for large or tall adults.
- Over 300 lb: a bariatric tub 33 to 36 inches wide.
- Wheelchair user: an outward side door built for transfers: wheelchair accessible tubs.
Size and water heater
Bigger tubs hold more water. Walk in tubs hold about 40 to 90 gallons to the overflow, but only 25 to 62 gallons with a bather seated, which is the number that matters. A 40 gallon tank works for most compact tubs, 50 gallons is the practical minimum for standard sizes, and two-seat and deep soakers want 65 gallons or a tankless unit. Water heater sizing guide →
Will it fit my old tub space?
A standard 60 inch alcove takes a 30 x 60 tub as-is, or a 52 to 55 inch tub with an extension panel to close the gap. Smaller spaces take a small walk in tub. Our installers confirm every measurement before anything ships.
Walk In Tub Sizes FAQ
What is the standard size of a walk in tub?
The most common walk in tub is about 30 inches wide by 52 inches long; 30 x 60 is the second most common because it drops straight into a 5 foot tub alcove.
What is the smallest walk in tub?
Compact models start at about 26 x 45 inches, such as the Ella Mobile and the Hydro Dimensions 2645. Front-entry tubs as short as 27 x 39 inches fit spaces where a tub will not.
How tall is a walk in tub?
Most seated walk in tubs stand about 37 to 40 inches tall so the bather can sit with water up to the chest. Lay-down models are lower; check the factory drawing on each model page.
Will a walk in tub fit through my bathroom door?
A one-piece tub needs a door and hallway about 2 inches wider than the tub. Most 28 to 30 inch tubs pass through a standard 30 or 32 inch door on edge; our installers check before it ships.
What size walk in tub do I need for a 60 inch alcove?
A 30 x 60 tub fills it exactly. A 52 to 55 inch tub also works with a factory extension panel that closes the gap.
Are there walk in tubs for two people?
Yes. Two-seat models run about 32 to 36 inches wide and 60 to 80 inches long, such as the Ella Companion, Escape and Big4Two.
